Ah, summertime, it brings warmth, sun, fun but it also brings fleas, ticks and allergies. That's not only bad news for us but for our dogs as well. Let's put this in perspective.
Have you ever had poison ivy, an itchy rash or a mosquito bite? It can itch real bad. Right? Our instinct is to scratch and scratch and scratch but we can use our brains to overcome that desire, usually. But you can understand how hard it is not to scratch when something is itching unceasingly; in fact, you probably wouldn't put up with that, you would go to the drugstore or the doctors or something! You just want to get rid of that itch!
Get Rid Mosquitoes
Now that we're on a tasteless ground, let's turn our attentiveness to our dog. They suffer from itching just like we do. The qoute is that when they have an unceasing itch, they may scratch at it unceasingly. This is where the qoute comes in because they will nothing else but scratch, dig and bite the fur and skin right off and then lick at it. Like a child who scratches at a mosquito bite until it bleeds and is an open sore.
This is what a hot spot is. A, spot on a dog, that has been scratched at to the point it is a raw open sore. It will get bigger and bigger because they just won't stop licking and scratching. These areas are prone to infection so it is prominent to get them taken care of quickly.
The area will need to be clipped and shaved. The wound should be left open, not bandaged, so the air can help with the medical process. Once this is done an antibiotic ointment can be applied and there are also medications to help dry out the area as well help operate the itching. With hot spots it is ideal to take your dog to the vet but if for some imagine you can not there are some non-prescription medications available.
